Sheep’s Head gets EU tourism boost after scooping top award (30/6/09)

The picturesque peninsula of Sheep’s Head in West Cork is to be promoted internationally after it claimed first prize in an EU tourism competition. Sheep’s Head was declared the Irish winner in the European Destination of Excellence awards at a ceremony in a Bantry hotel this week.
The local community will now receive a grant of €5,000 for business development, a specially-commissioned photo shoot, e-marketing opportunities and other EU supports to raise its profile abroad.
The coastal beauty spot beat off competition from other Irish challengers including Ballyhoura in Cork, Slieve League in Donegal and Erris in Mayo. Junior Minister Martin Mansergh, who presented the award, praised the dedication of the people of Sheep’s Head ‘who have, with a mixture of care and pride, preserved this local treasure for all of us.’A spokesperson for Fáilte Ireland said the community knowledge, promotion and upholding and of the area was ‘outstanding’.
The peninsula hosts one of Ireland’s top walking routes, the Sheep’s Head Way, and also contains several designated special areas of protection under the habitats directive, the birds directive and the heritage directive.
