Irish soccer fans travelling to Austria or Switzerland to catch the quarter-finals, semi-finals or finals of the Euro 2008 tournament are being advised to contact a special helpline if they run into any problems. The supporters’ rights helpline (00800 – 6 7 8 9 10 11) is easy to remember and free of charge, and will answer a range of consumer queries including ticketing issues, roaming charges, air passenger rights and medical cover abroad. Difficulties with tickets are among the most common problems reported by football fans, from transferring tickets in case of illness, overcharging, counterfeit tickets, non-delivery and lack of refunds.
EU Consumer Commissioner Meglena Kuneva stressed the importance of knowing your rights in the event of any hassle with travel operators or other agencies. She said, ‘We want fans to have the best possible experience at Euro 208 – and understanding their consumer rights will help them greatly.’
The helpline is run by the Europe Direct Contact Centre, as part of a joint EU-EUFA information campaign to advise and support fans. More information is available at and
Several thousand Irish fans making the trip to the Austrian capital of Vienna or Basle in Switzerland have also been advised to ensure that they’re vaccinated against measles, following significant outbreaks of the disease in the host countries. The Health Protection Surveillance Centre has warned that although measles is most commonly caught by children under four years old, anyone is vulnerable to the potentially fatal disease if they are not protected through vaccination or natural infection.
